On 23 June 2000, a deliberately lit fire engulfed the Palace Backpackers Hostel in Childers, Queensland, claiming the lives of 15 young travelers from around the world. Among them were two Dutch nationals: Joly van der Velden, 23, and Sebastian Westerveld, 22

The fire was started by Robert Paul Long, a former resident of the hostel who had been evicted for non-payment of rent. He was later convicted of arson and two counts of murder, receiving a life sentence

The tragedy deeply affected the Dutch community, both in Australia and the Netherlands. Survivors and families of the victims have worked to keep the memory of those lost alive. A memorial was established in the rebuilt Palace building, featuring a glass wall and a portrait of the 15 victims, serving as a place of reflection and remembrance.

As the 25th anniversary of the fire approaches in June 2025, commemorations are planned to honor the lives lost and the resilience of the survivors. The Dutch victims, Joly and Sebastian, are remembered for their adventurous spirits and the joy they brought to those who knew them.
