Chris Hemsworth (born 11 August 1983), Liam Hemsworth (born 13 January 1990), and Luke Hemsworth (born 5 November 1980) are Australian actors whose shared success has brought international attention to their family’s diverse heritage. Through their mother, Leonie (née van Os), they have Dutch ancestry: their maternal grandfather was a Dutch immigrant who settled in Australia. The van Os family represents part of the postwar wave of Dutch migration that contributed to Australian education, community life, and the arts.
The brothers grew up in Melbourne and the Northern Territory, later settling on Phillip Island. Their mother worked as a teacher and their father in social services. Although none of the family were from the entertainment industry, the three brothers developed an interest in acting through school theatre and local productions.
Luke was the first to enter television, appearing in the long-running Australian series Neighbours and later taking on international roles, including in the acclaimed science-fiction series Westworld. His early success helped pave the way for his younger brothers to pursue acting.
Chris began his professional career in the television series Home and Away (2004–2007), before moving into international film roles. He became widely known for portraying Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and has appeared in major films such as The Avengers, Rush, Extraction, and Blackhat. He has also worked as a producer on projects including Interceptor and Extraction 2, and appeared in the documentary series Limitless.
Liam followed a similar path, beginning with roles in Neighbours and The Elephant Princess before achieving international recognition in The Last Song (2010) and The Hunger Games film series (2012–2015). He later starred in Independence Day: Resurgence and continues to work across both Australian and international film industries.
Together, the Hemsworth brothers illustrate how one Dutch-Australian family has contributed to Australia’s growing presence in global film and television.
