Abel Tasman – Bermuda Schooner
This Bermuda Schooner, derived from the famous “America 1”, designed by George Steer. From this renowned fast yacht from the mid-19th century a few replicas have been built. Though “Abel Tasman” is not a pure replica, she has the same lines. She has been proven seaworthy, fast and yet manageable for a small crew. The hull is built of 10 mm steel which makes it suitable for extreme conditions such as expeditions to the coldest regions of the world. Not without reason she bears the name of a famous Dutch explorer.
A 39 m 126 (foot) well-proportioned steel luxury yacht which was made by Jj Pattje and her design plans were devised by JJ Pattje. A well sized converted private yacht ABEL TASMAN is a particularly distinctive Dutch made yacht which was launched to completion in 1913. Sleeping 22 passengers and 3 qualified crew, sailing yacht Abel Tasman is ex Hermann; Laksen; Atlantis. She could be considered a classic converted private yacht.
She had refit maintenance and changes completed in 1998.
This was a 2608-ton general cargo ship built for HC Sleigh (a subsidiary of Union Steam Ship Company) at Aberdeen in 1957. She carried timber between Australian ports and sometimes to New Zealand.In 1975 Abel Tasman was sold to a Singapore company and renamed Golden Globe. Over the following years she had many changes of name.
The ship was arrested in Bangladesh in 1985 on smuggling charges, and was broken up there in 1989-1990.
This is a container ship built in 1971 by IHC Offshore & Marine – Krimpen aan de Ijssel, Netherlands. Known as Nedlloyd Tasman, Mounts Bay, Abel Tasman. It’s gross tonnage is 27614 tons.
Sold to Nedlloyd Lijen BV Rotterdam Netherland, in 1977, renamed ” NEDLLOYD TASMAN “. In 1981 Renamed ” MOUNTS BAY ” and in 1992 ” NEDLLOYD TASMAN “. Last known owner (1986) BU Kaohsiung Taiwan.
