Hermanus Wouter Paans, generally known as Manus, was born at Hooge en Lage Zwaluwe on 28 November 1908. He later lived in Werkendam and worked as a ship’s captain. On 30 October 1931, he married Margaretha Martina Ippel, who had been born in Werkendam on 5 October 1911.
The couple had two children: Cornelis Arnoldus Paans, born in De Werken in 1932, and Neeltje Paans, born in Hardinxveld in 1937.
On 22 July 1950, the Paans family departed Schiphol on the second KLM flight carrying Dutch workers and their families to Australia. The surviving seating plan records Manus and Margaretha in seats L1 and L2, their son Cornelis in K3 and their daughter Neeltje in K1. A fifth passenger, identified only as “G. Paans”, occupied seat K2, but this person has not yet been identified.
The family arrived in Perth on 26 July 1950 and began a new chapter in Western Australia. Manus remained in Australia and died in Albany on 8 October 1987. Margaretha later returned to the Netherlands and died in Dordrecht in 1977.
The Paans family’s journey illustrates how the organised migration of 1950 included not only individual workers but also wives and children who travelled together to establish new lives in Australia. It also shows that the migrants’ later experiences did not all follow the same course: while Manus remained in Western Australia, Margaretha eventually returned to the Netherlands.
The following account is based on genealogical and archival research undertaken by Fred Stuy, which has helped identify the Paans family recorded on the surviving KLM seating plan.
